Jonathan E. Goldberg, partner at Schochor, Staton, Goldberg & Cardea, PA, traces his path to the law to his family. His father, grandfather and other relatives were attorneys, and listening to their stories about life in court inspired him to follow in their footsteps. As he grew older and became more aware of how the law affects almost all aspects of daily life, his interest in the legal field grew. He thought he would enjoy the challenge of representing clients so they received fairness and justice — and he was right.

Goldberg earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1988 and went on to attend the University of Baltimore, where he served on the law review. He received his juris doctor degree in 1991, graduating magna cum laude. He is a member of the Maryland and Washington, D.C., bars.

A name partner at Schochor, Staton, Goldberg & Cardea, PA, Goldberg has practiced law for 35 years, with most of his career focused on medical malpractice litigation.

After beginning on the defense side, he has spent more than 20 years representing injured parties — clients who face insurance companies and health care institutions with nearly unlimited resources. Overcoming those challenges, he said, requires determination, thoroughness and preparation. He has also lectured on medical malpractice and personal injury law for many years and serves on many committees of the Maryland Association for Justice, where he is the incoming parliamentarian.

“Helping someone can be the greatest gift that you can give,” he said of his work.

He speaks honestly with those considering a legal career, noting that the profession is rewarding but not easy, and that the portrayal of the legal system on television or in the movies is not accurate. He would also like to serve his legal community by giving back in any way he can, passing along what he has learned to the next generation of lawyers. His son is graduating law school in May, and he is excited to see where his legal career takes him.

Outside the office, he is an avid Orioles and Maryland Terrapins fan — and still believes he could help either team win if given the chance to play.
