system leaders joined local and state officials, clinicians and community stakeholders to hold a groundbreaking ceremony last week in Prince George’s County.

The planned Women’s Health Pavilion at Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center will be designed to expand access to comprehensive care. The 67,000-square-foot, three-story pavilion will also serve as a hub for a range of services designed to meet the needs of women and families.

The facility will offer inpatient obstetric care, including labor, delivery and postpartum services, along with expanded specialty care provisions to support healthy pregnancies, a release says.

The April 22 ceremony was on the campus of the Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center in .

“This groundbreaking represents our commitment to improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” Luminis Health CEO Tori Bayless said, according to a news release issued that day.

“The Women’s Health Pavilion is more than a building, it is a promise to deliver compassionate, high-quality, and equitable care for women and families across our region. We are proud to invest in a future where every woman has access to the care she deserves, close to home.”

According to Luminis Health, the facility will include private labor and delivery rooms, C‑section operating rooms, midwife-supported birthing suites, postpartum and nursery units, a rooftop helipad with direct access to the emergency department, a special-care nursery, and designated shell space for expanding women’s services.

According to the news release, eight in 10 women leave Prince George’s County to deliver their babies “due to limited access to obstetrical care.”

Construction is underway with an expected launch in late 2028, according to Luminis Health. Once up and running, the company expects to deliver roughly 2,000 babies per year.

Additionally, the construction project will include modernized operating rooms, interventional radiology and sterile processing; a redesigned emergency department; an expanded laboratory, along with food and nutrition spaces; and utility and infrastructure improvements.

“The Women’s Health Pavilion reflects our commitment to a coordinated approach to maternal care, supporting women before , guiding them through high-quality prenatal care, and ensuring that support continues during the critical postpartum period,” LHDCMC President Deneen Richmond said in a statement.
