Juanita Jackson Mitchell Law Center reopens in Baltimore

State and community leaders gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony that celebrated the reopening and redevelopment of a historic City establishment honoring the legacy of , Maryland’s first Black woman attorney.

Held on Friday morning at 1239 Druid Hill Ave. in West Baltimore, the ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the Juanita Jackson Mitchell Law Center attracted U.S. Sen. (D-Md.), Alvin C. Hathaway Sr., president of , Sen. Michael Bowen Mitchell – the son of Juanita Jackson Mitchell – and other federal, state and local officials.

The building was once the law office for Juanita Jackson Mitchell, also a civil rights activist and organizer with the . The redeveloped center, partially made possible by $1.75 million in Fiscal Year 2023 Congressionally Directed Spending, will now offer free legal services.

Beloved Community Services Corp. owns the building and led restoration efforts for the property. 

In addition, the building will be the new home of The ROAR Center, which will provide services for survivors of crime, according to Van Hollen’s office.
