Lockheed Martin’s Stephanie C. Hill considers herself an “accidental engineer,” and as a result, has dedicated her 28-year career to maximizing innovation to better serve the United States — from protecting national security to delivering essential citizen services — and to opening the minds of students of all ages and races to the opportunities of working in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Hill joined Lockheed Martin in 1987 as a software engineer.

Today, she serves as vice president and general manager of the company’s Information Systems & Global Solutions Civil line of business, based in Rockville, which supports various nondefense U.S. government agencies and regulated commercial industries. She leads more than 10,000 employees nationwide.

“My team, in partnership with government agencies, supports critical missions — many operated right here in Maryland, that range from developing air traffic management systems that control 60 percent of the world’s air space to delivering the world’s largest electronic repository of biometric identification and criminal history information to assist law enforcement in solving and preventing crimes and terrorist activities,” Hill said.

Hill’s organization also is engineering safe and efficient health care solutions for federal partners with a large team in Baltimore supporting the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Social Security Administration. The team is leveraging its experience in systems integration to safeguard crucial healthcare data; support claims processing and disability examinations for millions of veterans; enable clinical research through data analytics; innovate with mobile solutions; and drive efficiency with intelligent application of information technologies.

“At Lockheed Martin, I have had the opportunity to make a difference in a way that I never imagined,” she said. “Our nation is at a crisis level when it comes to producing scientists and engineers. I want to do all I can to let our young people know that they can have a similar, rewarding experience in STEM.”

Hill also is active in the technology industry and community. She serves on the Maryland Business Roundtable and is active in other community and industry organizations.
