ANNAPOLIS — Federal officials say they are abandoning an effort to build a State Department training facility in Queen Anne’s County.

General Services Administrator Martha Johnson announced the decision Monday afternoon, noting community and environmentalist objections to the $100 million training center planned for 2,000 acres of private land near Ruthsburg.

Johnson said in a Monday letter to Sen. Barbara Mikulski that a preliminary analysis showed a “significant change in land use and considerable noise and traffic impacts.”

Maryland Gov. said in a news release that he hoped another site in Maryland would be selected.

Johnson’s letter said state department and general services administration employees were actively looking for new locations for the project.
