Dr. Tina L. Cheng, Dr. Carole Miller, Dr. Miriam Cohen, Dr. Bonnie Phipps, Lillie Shockney and Dr. Vicki Tepper | WOMEN IN BUSINESS TRAILBLAZERS

The Center Club recently honored Dr. Tina L. Cheng, Dr. Miriam L. Cohen, Dr. Carole B. Miller, Dr. Bonnie Phipps and Lillie Schockney at the annual Women in Business Trailblazers in Healthcare Awards Dinner.

Cheng was honored for her work as a professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is the chair of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee and vice chair of Johns Hopkins Department of Pediatrics. Cheng received the 2012 Academic Pediatric Association award for public policy/advocacy and has authored over 100 publications. She is an active clinician and has developed award-winning models of primary care to address the needs of vulnerable children, adolescents and families.

Cohen was honored for her work as a clinical cardiologist at Medstar-Union Memorial Hospital. Cohen was the first trained female cardiologist in Maryland and among the first five in the United States. Throughout her career, Cohen has held office or been a member of various organizations including: the Maryland Society of Cardiologists, the American College of Cardiology, American Society of Echocardiography, the local and national chapters of the American Heart Association and has lectured and given grand rounds on myriad cardiovascular topics.

Miller was honored for her work as an oncologist and as the director of the cancer institute at Saint Ages Hospital. She was on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for 12 years before joining Saint Agnes in 2002. Since then, she has built the program’s research involvement to more than 30 ongoing clinical trials, many of which have led to important breakthroughs in oncology. Miller is a nationally recognized expert on CML and blood cancers, as well as a renowned community health advocate. She is chair of the Women’s Leadership Council at the United Way of Central Maryland and has worked with Catholic Charities and the American Red Cross on fundraising.

Phipps was honored for her work as the president and CEO of Saint Agnes Healthcare and for her service as a ministry market leader for Ascension Health. She provides strategic and operational leadership for Saint Agnes Healthcare while promoting alignment among health ministries within her market. Prior to joining Saint Agnes in 2006, she served as President and CEO of both Saint Joseph’s Hospital and PROMINA Health System. Phipps serves on multiple boards and has been a faculty member on several national programs. She was inducted into the Georgia State University Business Hall of Fame in 2005.

Shockney was honored for her work as the administrative director and distinguished service assistant professor of breast cancer at Johns Hopkins. She is a nationally known speaker and published author, having written eight books and many articles on breast cancer. She serves on the medical advisory board of several national breast cancer organizations and is the co-founder and vice president of a national non-profit organization called “Mothers Supporting Daughters with Breast Cancer.” She is the recipient of the Global Business Leadership award, the American Cancer Society’s Voice of Hope Award, the Outstanding Women of America Award, and was nominated for the MacArthur Genius Award, along with many others accolades.

Tepper was honored for her work in pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. After completing her post-doctoral training in the department of pediatrics in 1990 she joined the faculty at the university. Since that time she has been working with children and families infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. She has been the Principal Investigator on several federally funded research projects and has published numerous articles on adherence to medication. In 2004 she began travelling to developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America to provide education and technical support to pediatric HIV care and treatment programs.
