Stanford Gann, Jr. is about as active as a lawyer can be with local bar associations and still have time to earn a living.
He has served on numerous committees of the Maryland State Bar Association, often as chairman, and on its board of governors. At the same time, he has been heavily involved with both the Baltimore City and Baltimore County bar associations.
And, he has done the work well.
Paul Carlin, who learned to assess leaders as executive director of the Maryland State Bar Association from 1985-2017, said Gann has brought “exemplary organization, conscientiousness, openness, fairness, intelligence and initiative to the leadership rolls he has held.”
Gann himself is proud of his bar association work. But he considers his most significant professional accomplishment helping a Cecil County family keep their home after a complicated, four-year legal battle over riparian water rights.
His bar association work, he said, “cannot surpass the pride and joy I was able to experience helping this family to keep their home,” he said.
With Levin and Gann, a full-service law firm based in Towson, Gann focusses on construction litigation and corporate, business and real estate law.
Gann also is the literary executor of the estate of author and art collector Gertrude Stein.
His volunteer work is extensive. As periodic chairman of pro bono committees for both the Baltimore City and Baltimore County bar associations, he helped lead pro bono efforts to help veterans and, in the case of the county, start an outreach clinic that regularly stationed lawyers at public libraries to serve anyone who needed legal help.
“I have found that bar association work can have the most impact on the practice of law, my community and society as a whole,” Gann said.
Gann also is active in his synagogue, Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. He has helped the synagogue with constitution and bylaws revisions and boosted its community outreach, including participating in a program that provides suits and other assistance to men looking for jobs.
