For Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States, the giant health plan, the list of significant accomplishments in elevating women is a long one.

Nearly 80 percent of the workforce is women, and women are well represented at all levels. The senior leadership team, including Regional President Ruth Williams-Brinkly is 80 percent women, and the board of directors is nearly 70 percent women.

The organization’s leadership development programs, which provide mentorship and training for potential leaders, put a heavy emphasis on developing and nurturing women leaders. Over the past three years, 55 percent of participants in Kaiser’s Strategic Leadership Program and 80 percent of the participants in its Executive Leadership Program have been women.

Currently, nearly 9,000 women are participating in the organization’s Business Resource Groups, which include Women Empowered at KP. The groups foster personal and professional growth and create a supportive environment.

Kaiser also has created external partnerships and sponsorships with organizations such as the American Heart Association, Black Girls vote and the Montgomery County Commission for Women. These partnerships help create opportunities for women to make an impact in various fields.

The organization has a Board Service Placement Program, which supports local non-profits, businesses and state and local entities while offering opportunities for Kaiser employees to share their expertise and advance community health. In 2022, 64 percent of the placements on these boards and commissions were women.
