With a focus on promoting the strength and success of the state’s banks and bankers, Ramon O. Looby has served as the president and CEO of the Maryland Bankers Association for nearly four years.

He was previously the senior vice president and public policy lead for Bank of America for nearly five years. Looby also was senior director of public policy for the Consumer Data Industry Association, executive director of the World Consumer Credit Reporting Conference and a special adviser of the Middle East and Africa for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

What advice would you offer someone interested in banking and finance as a career?

If you’re considering a career in banking and finance, remember that curiosity and a willingness to learn are your best tools. Start with a solid understanding of financial principles and keep up with the latest trends — this industry never stands still. Building relationships is key, so connect with mentors and peers who can guide you. And always remember, it’s about more than numbers; understanding and meeting your clients’ and communities’ needs makes this career truly rewarding.

What are the biggest challenges facing your industry?

Our industry is facing some significant challenges. We’re constantly innovating to keep up with the rapid pace of technological change. Cybersecurity is a major concern as more banking services move online. Navigating complex regulations is also a significant part of our work. The most important challenge we’re tackling is ensuring everyone can access banking services.
Financial inclusion is our key goal and we’re working hard to make it a reality.
