Debbie Ricker
Hood College

As a champion of Hood’s core values of Hope, Opportunity, Obligation and Democracy, Ricker spearheaded the development of new undergraduate programs in public health, sustainability studies, art therapy and finance. She also played an instrumental role in launching Hood’s highly successful graduate cybersecurity program. Ricker oversaw all student retention efforts, including the formation of Hood’s Office of Student Success, which helps students of all class levels achieve their academic goals through mentorship, tutoring and advising. Her efforts resulted in record-setting first-year retention and graduation rates. Additionally, Ricker led Hood’s High Impact Practice Task Force, which aimed to ensure that every Hood student has at least one experiential learning opportunity before graduating.
“One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a leader in Maryland is that meaningful partnerships — grounded in shared goals and a commitment to community — are essential to student success and regional vitality,” Ricker said. She noted that student success doesn’t happen by chance but must be intentionally designed and resourced.
When facing challenges such as demographic shifts and economic uncertainty from regional federal workforce reductions, Ricker explained she chose to respond with resilience and reinvention rather than retrenchment. She diversified Hood’s academic portfolio, creating flexible, workforce-aligned programs to attract non-traditional students and working professionals while strengthening community and industry partnerships.
“As president of Hood College, I view my role—and my influence—as a responsibility to serve not just our campus, but our broader Maryland community,” Ricker said. She uses her influence to build bridges between education and industry, students and opportunity and the college and community.
