Denise Koch

Denise Koch has served as a news anchor and reporter at WJZ-TV for more than 40 years, establishing herself as one of Maryland’s most recognizable and trusted journalism voices. Throughout her extensive career, Koch has covered every beat and corner of the state while also traveling internationally to West Africa, Jamaica and China to report on stories involving Marylanders.
Koch’s path to broadcasting began in the arts. She attended UCLA for two years before graduating from the California Institute of the Arts and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan. Before transitioning to news, Koch pursued acting and taught at the University of Wisconsin and UMBC while building her first career as an actress. She performed at theaters around the country, including Baltimore’s Center Stage where she also served as literary manager.
Beyond broadcasting, Koch has maintained strong community involvement. She served on the Women’s Leadership Council at United Way of Central Maryland from 2004 to 2009 and as a board member for the United Way of Central Maryland from 2009 to 2015. She also participated in the de Tocqueville program at UWMC from 2004 to 2015 and currently serves with TurnAround Inc.
Reflecting on her leadership experience, Koch said, “The only way to understand a community and its needs is to become as fully part of it as possible.” When discussing challenges, she noted, “The biggest challenges I’ve faced have been surviving in a business where you’re constantly under scrutiny and open to everyone’s opinions. Those opinions matter, they must be digested and understood. But then they must be put aside so you can maintain your own sense of purpose and dignity.”
“I try to make a positive impact by fighting for a balanced view of our city and state on every newscast,” she said. “It’s our job to relate the hard facts but, I think, we must also celebrate the joys of living among compassionate, sometimes struggling yet, so often, generous neighbors. I hope I’ve earned the trust of our viewers and I work to use that trust to uncover the truth in the stories we cover.”
