Dr.Joseph Bennett serves as chief of surgery for LifeBridge Health, where he leads the surgical division of a $2.1 billion health system as both a frontline cancer surgeon and a healthcare innovator. A surgical oncologist and general surgeon with more than 20 years of experience, Bennett specializes in treating complex and challenging cancers, including pancreatic, liver, bile duct, gastric, melanoma and sarcoma. His clinical work spans hepatobiliary-pancreas surgery, general surgery, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, and upper and lower endoscopy, and he has pioneered novel cancer surgery techniques, precision medicine approaches and biomedical engineering solutions along with several programs that optimize patients throughout the peri-operative process.
Bennett earned his medical degree summa cum laude from the SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn, where he was an Alpha Omega Alpha honoree, after completing a bachelor’s degree with honors in chemistry at Colgate University. He finished his general surgery residency at the University of Chicago and pursued two surgical oncology fellowships at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He later earned an MBA with a concentration in healthcare administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst to strengthen his command of healthcare management, operations, finance and strategy.
Before joining LifeBridge Health in 2024, he served as chief of surgical oncology and president of the medical and dental staff at Christiana Care System. He is a founding medical partner of Doctorpedia, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a past president of its Delaware chapter, and he has frequently been named a top doctor in cancer surgery in both Maryland and Delaware.
Bennett views his most significant accomplishment as merging clinical and surgical expertise with business training to advance surgical excellence across a large, multi-hospital community health system, demonstrating that community hospitals can deliver world-class care.
