MD employment rose by nearly 12K jobs in July
Maryland employment estimates found that total nonfarm employment in the state rose by 11,700 jobs in July in data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It also revised preliminary estimates for June employment, adding 300 jobs to a gain of 1,200.
The state’s private sector lead the gains in July adding 10,900 jobs. BLS estimates that the state has added 29,800 nonfarm jobs through the first seven months of 2026 growing at a 1.1% rate.
BLS estimates that the state’s unemployment rate fell to 4.2% which is just above the national average of 4.1%. The state’s labor force participation rate fell to 63.8% which is above the 61.4% national average.
The five sectors with the largest estimated employment gains in July were: Healthcare and Social Assistance (4,800 jobs); professional, acientific and technical services (3,000 jobs); accommodation and food services (1,400 jobs); administrative and support and waste management and remediation (900 jobs); manufacturing (800 jobs); and government (800 jobs).
In total, five sectors experienced employment losses in July: Retail trade (-1,200 jobs); information (-300 jobs); other services (-300 jobs); construction (-200 jobs); and management of companies and enterprises (-200 jobs).
