Executive Director
Emerge Maryland
How do you define mentoring and what steps do you take to ensure it is a priority and just part of your job duties?
As a mentor, I have learned that listening is key to success in my relationships. Some women need very little advice, while others need significantly more. Others need someone to serve as a sounding-board as they talk through their choices and decisions before drawing their own conclusions. I make sure I am available for all scenarios.
The past year has not only been challenging with COVID but we have also faced race and discrimination challenges and realities as a state and a country. How do you establish a strategy for diversity, equity and inclusion in your organization and how do you use your influential voice to help others understand the importance?
Diversity, equity, and inclusion have always been at the foundation of Emerge Maryland since it began nine years ago. Our curriculum has always had a diversity and inclusion component, and we have been working equity and justice into each of the subjects of our training. These issues are fundamental, and we have enhanced these efforts every year.
