DR. HEIDI M. ANDERSON

PRESIDENT
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE

What is the most important thing you do in your job?
The most important thing that I do in my job is to educate students to fulfill their dream of achieving a college degree and prepare them to be global citizens who contribute to the workforce.

Who was your most significant mentor and what did you learn from that person?
My most significant mentor was Dr. Kumble Subbaswamy, now chancellor of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dr. Subbaswamy mentored me to become a senior leader in higher education. He encouraged me to be an authentic leader, to respect diverse ways of thinking, and advocate for student success in various ways.

If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t in higher education, I would probably have been in the pharmaceutical industry, practicing with my pharmacy degree.
