Gov. ‘s office announced an additional $1 million in Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program funds for families in Garrett and Allegany counties affected by from recent heavy rainfall.

The state’s departments of human services and housing and community development partnered to make the emergency funds available, which will support furnace and hot water heater repairs and replacements for income-eligible households recently affected by severe flooding, according to Moore’s office.

“In the wake of devastating flooding, continues to rebuild. But addressing the breadth of damage requires an all-hands-on-deck approach,” Moore said in a statement.

“I want the people of Garrett and Allegany Counties to know that Maryland is committed to standing in the breach every step of the way. These funds support emergency home repairs for affected families, helping those with the greatest need get back on their feet faster.”

As a result of torrential rainfall and flash flooding in May, residents throughout Garrett and Allegany counties sustained home and infrastructural damage.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program regulations allow the use of emergency funds in response to natural disasters in accordance with the state’s federally approved plan to secure energy-related health and safety needs.

“The assistance announced today will help impacted families restore capacity in their homes to stay cool this summer and warm in the winter months ahead,” Moore’s office said.
