Multiple workers were injured in an electrical incident Monday morning at the Medical Center Metro station in , authorities said.

Rescue vehicles sped to the station just before 8 a.m., snarling traffic along Rockville Pike near the National Institutes of Health, but the station remained open to rail passengers.

The workers had been in an electrical shaft or vault at the station, said Pete Piringer, spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Service. One of them came into contact with an electrical current, and two others were injured as they came to his aid, according to preliminary reports. The most severely injured worker was taken to a hospital as a “priority one” patient with shocks or burns, Piringer said. The two others were transported in serious condition.

The cause of the incident is being investigated.

Metro General Manager Randy Clarke said in a statement on social media that the agency is “hoping for a full recovery of the injured contractors.” A spokesman for the agency declined to give more information.
