When Aileen McShea Tinney first enrolled in the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, she wanted to learn more about aging as well as be part of a growing industry. After obtaining a master of health science degree in finance and management from Johns Hopkins University, she entered the senior health care field and never looked back.
McShea Tinney held several senior leadership positions during her nearly 20-year tenure at Catholic Charities, including division director of senior services. She joined Keswick in 2016 as its vice president and was named president and CEO in September 2021.
How has the pandemic changed your view on your job or broader profession?
Senior living and specifically nursing homes have been the hardest hit in the labor crisis that grew out of the pandemic. In addition to nursing roles at all levels, there remains a dire need for leaders, today and into the future. These workforce challenges should be a concern for every one of us – for those we love, and for ourselves. At Keswick, we are grateful for long-standing and new partnerships with students and new team members of all ages who are learning and growing with us.
What’s your best advice for someone who aspires to your job?
Think less about what job you think you want and more about the problem you are trying to solve. Consider all the other angles and stakeholders connected to that space. Go there. Learn all you can, and you will find your way.
Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?
Listening and learning from others creates space for what is possible and opens us up to who might help lead the way. The stories that surround us every day teach us what we cannot know ourselves… we just need to stay open.
