Mohan Suntha took over as president and CEO of the giant University of Maryland Medical System, with its 28,000 employees and more than 150 locations, in November 2019.
A graduate of the Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia, Suntha has spent his entire career with the UM system. He trained as a resident in the department of radiation oncology in 1991 and has served as president and CEO of the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson and as CEO of the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
How has the pandemic changed your view on your job or broader profession?
The challenges over the past few years have served as a powerful reminder of the differential impact health care has on the vibrancy of our communities and the importance of maintaining our role as a “Trusted Voice.”
What’s your best advice for someone who aspires to your job?
Remain focused on the value proposition that is defined by our mission.
Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?
My father has served as my role model throughout my life.
What do you do for fun and why?
Golf, because it is the single hardest sport; it is all I have ever played.
