Managing Partner – Baltimore Office
DLA Piper LLP

Ellen Dew, managing partner of DLA Piper LLP’s Baltimore office, believes in the power of celebration and encouragement to drive success.

With one year in her current role, Dew said her most important contribution is carrying forward the support she received throughout her career to inspire confidence in others.

What’s the most important thing you do?

I am fortunate to have people in my personal and professional life who have celebrated my hard work and encouraged my successes. This has given me confidence to take risks and tackle daunting challenges. The most important thing I do is to carry that forward so that my teams and especially my children also have the confidence and courage to build on my efforts and celebrate their own hard work.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career?

The late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg said “Fight for the things you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” As a lawyer and a leader, I am constantly advocating and sometimes fighting for what my clients care about and what I care about. But the only way to be successful in those fights is to lead others to join me.

What’s the most significant challenge facing our state?

Revitalizing Maryland as a location to attract business and investment is vital. Making our state a destination where companies want to plant roots, as a main location or a hub, brings jobs, people, and drives economic growth. We’ve seen this as a priority for the governor’s administration, and my hope is that all of us in our various roles will do what we can to keep Maryland competitive.
