Qiagen, a Dutch maker of diagnostic tools for gene with operations in Montgomery and Frederick counties, said it plans to combine its three sites into two campuses and invest an additional $10 million to accommodate expected future growth, bringing its total investment in Maryland to $50 million.

The company will close its current site at Gaithersburg and move activities there to its Germantown campus by early 2015.

The manufacturing plant in Germantown will be expanded to accommodate some of the company’s highest-volume diagnostic assays, including one for cervical prevention.

The Frederick campus will continue to focus on research and development and manufacturing of molecular testing products for life sciences research and other applications.
